JVC HA-M5X Xtreme Xplosives headphones Written Review

The first look shows nothing extremely fancy, no accessories, just a good looking pair of over-ear headphones.

Picture
Lets start with some specifications:

  • Driver Unit 50mm
  • Magnet type Neodymium
  • Frequency Response 7-23,000Hz
  • Nominal Impedance 32ohms
  • Sensitivity 105dB/1mW Max.
  • Input Capability
  • 1000mW(IEC)
  • Cord Length 1.2m*2.6mm
  • Weight (without cord) 280g PlugGold plated
Design: With these headphones they’ve gone for the rough/industrial/strong looking design. They really do stand out. But so do the others in this series so not the biggest surprise for me. The 3.5mm connector even sports the industrial design!

Picture
Starting with the cable they have gone for the well known ‘Beats’ styling. This design feature actually serves a purpose though, being thicker than the average cable it reduces the chance of ‘wire stretching’. Which can become a very serious problem. All the cable connections are built very well and look good at the same time.

Picture
The ear padding on these headphones are made from memory foam as well as being angled to better fit the shape of you head. While making them more comfortable this also improves the sound isolation in these headphones which frankly is still not very good due to the “Deep Bass Port”. This is just a fancy way of saying these are open headphones.

Picture
The rubber protectors on the sides seem to be more of a gimmick than anything however the headphones do seem to be able to be bashed around without suffering as much as a scratch. It does add some looks to the product overall though.

Picture
The headband is the first disappointment I have come across so far. I mean seriously?!?! Camouflage?!? Camouflage is a no go unless you're the type of person who has an underground bunker and a life supply of tinned food because ‘THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US!’. Onto the performance now though. Calm down Hal.

Performance: These Xtreme Xplosives are………very good. Xtreme? Debatable. However the name aside, yes they do have very good bass. But i see that as an expectation and not particularly out of the blue. I was more interested in how it copes with the highs and mids. Suprisingly quite well. Better than alot of the competition and better than its on-ear versions, the JVC HA-S4X’s.

Conclusion: A pair of headphones that perform as well as they look. Definitely worth buying.

Verdict:

Rating- 7/10

Value- 9/10
