JVC HA-S4X Xtreme Xplosive headphones Written Review

2/2/2012

Comments

The first look shows a nicely designed pair of headphones but with some potentially bad limitations.
Picture
Here’s the spec:

  • Driver Unit 40mm
  • Magnet type Neodymium
  • Frequency Response 7-23,000Hz
  • Nominal Impedance 32ohms
  • Sensitivity 102dB/1mW
  • Max. Input Capability 1000mW(IEC)
  • Cord Length 1.2m*2.6mm
  • Weight (without cord) 170g
  • Plug Gold plated

Design: Like the rest of the series, these headphones have that rough industrial design to them.
Picture
The ‘Beats’ style cable will prevent any ‘cable stretching’ so it’s all good there. The headphones are made for small heads. Sorry I just had to get that out there, I’ll get back to that.
Picture
So as I was saying before I rudely interrupted myself, the ear pads are just standard foam, nothing special. The Rubber protectors of the sides seems to be more a gimmick than a feature.
Picture
Now the place where the headband connects to the headphones is where the ‘Deep bass port’ is. I would class these as semi-open headphones. Sticking to the headband-headphone connection area, it doesn’t seem to move a great deal to fit the shape of your head making these headphones very firm in my eyes. From then on I’d say it goes a bit downhill.
Picture
The headband sliders are a bit jerky and rough. The padding on the headband is too thin and its camouflage!!! A genuine ‘WTF’ moment for me. The headband also seems to be made for small thin heads otherwise its a bit painful.
Picture
Performance: Putting those niggles behind us, they actually perform pretty well. The bass is punchy though not as good as the HA-M5X’s. The high’s and mid’s are good as well, especially for the price.

Conclusion: A cool looking, well performing pair of headphones. Its just a shame they aren’t a good fit for the majority.

Verdict:

Rating- 6/10

Value- 8/10
